Nowadays air-conditioners are widely used and this trend is growing, increasing global energy consumption. As these appliances consume the same – or even more – energy as a fridge or an electric oven, it is worth being cautious and following some useful tips on using them properly.
Most importantly, if you want to buy air-conditioning equipment make sure you check how much energy it consumes and if possible choose an external unit with inverter technology. Even if they are more expensive, these appliances are more energy-efficient and you can save up to 30% in energy (and costs) by using them in the long term.
- Think long over where you should place the outdoor unit. You should place it away from sunlight or use an appropriate screen.
- Make sure the outdoor unit is well ventilated, because besides breaking down, "clogged" appliances have to work harder and therefore they consume more.
- It is worthwhile using them only at the hottest time of the day.
- Before turning it on, make sure doors and windows are closed and the condensed water can drain away freely.
- It is very important to set an appropriate temperature! The thermostat of the indoor units should be set so that the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperature is 6-7°C, with the indoor temperature around 24-26°C in the summer (as recommended by doctors).
- The dehumidifying function of the appliance helps to maintain appropriate conditions. Appropriate air humidity is 40-60%.
Finally, you should ensure appropriate maintenance. Regular cleaning of filters (from dust, pollen, etc.) decreases energy consumption and also protects the health of the persons in the premises.
